Short answer: it depends on how you want to get on the water. If you book a captained charter, you need no license at all — a licensed local captain runs the boat while you relax. If you want to rent a boat and drive it yourself, Florida law applies.
The Florida rule for self-drive rentals: anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete a Florida Boating Safety Education course and carry the ID card. At Fun in the Sun, self-drive renters must also be at least 25 years old, present a valid credit card and photo ID, and have real prior boating experience. Renters born on/after 1988 can take the required test online before check-in.
A few rental rules worth knowing up front: no trips to the Dry Tortugas or Marquesas, no nighttime operation, no towables, and a refundable deposit is held on your card. If you’ve driven a boat fewer than 20 times in the ocean — or never in the Keys — we recommend starting with a captained charter so a local pro can show you the ropes.
